Overview

ENS (Ethereum Name Service) is the naming layer that turns 0x... addresses into readable name.eth identities. Its November 2021 token distribution became a landmark case of rewarding real domain-holder users. Today it has over 630,000 owners and 1.3 million names, and is transitioning to ENSv2.

Analysis

ENS already completed its token generation event in 2021, and I found no active new distribution campaign. There is nothing to actively earn right now. DAO governance and ENSv2 development continue, but these are aimed at existing holders and developers, not newcomers looking to earn from scratch today. The price has fallen sharply from its all-time high of $83.4 (Nov 2021) to around $4.24. Hackathon prizes such as at ETHGlobal Lisbon exist, but only for developers building integrations.

Allocation

In November 2021, ENS conducted a large token distribution to existing .eth name holders, widely cited as an example of rewarding genuine users. I found no evidence of a second or third distribution season since then. DAO treasury grants and hackathon sponsorships continue, but these are not general user distribution programs.

Tokenomics

Total supply is confirmed at 100 million ENS. Detailed allocation breakdown and unlock schedule could not be confirmed in the sources reviewed. Some external reports suggest vesting from the 2021 distribution has since ended, but this is not verified through official channels here.

Security & risks

Verified security information

The official site links to a Bug Bounty program. In July 2026, the ENS Security Council's eight members were approved for a new two-year term with limited veto power to block malicious governance proposals. No named external audit firm or date could be confirmed, and no past exploit is documented in the sources reviewed.

Key risks

The token price has fallen roughly 95% from its all-time high of $83.4.

  • No new-user distribution or points programme is currently active.
  • The ENSv2 migration may affect existing names or integrated applications.
  • The scope of DAO governance and the Security Council's authority may change over time.

What's next

ENSv2 rollout is targeted for early 2026. The Security Council's new two-year term was approved in July 2026, and feature development continues via ENSIPs.
