Aptos airdropped APT to testnet users: how free work turned into thousands of dollars

Aptos​, an L1 from a team of ex-Meta engineers, distributed APT almost at the same moment its mainnet went live. It went to testnet participants and people who minted the testnet NFT​. Free work turned into thousands of dollars — the textbook example of a testnet play.

What was rewarded

• Signing up for and taking part in the incentivised testnet
• Holding the commemorative testnet NFT (a free mint)

Both were free​. A chain that had raised $350m in total from a16z and others handed tokens to people who had paid nothing. It proved how strong the combination of "big raise, no token yet, testnet open" really is.

How to play testnets

The takeaway: touch every testnet from a well-funded chain as soon as you find it.

1. Keep a list of unlaunched chains with large raises (we track them on this site too)
2. Join early when a testnet opens — spots are often first-come or drawn by lottery
3. Always mint commemorative NFTs and badges when they are free
4. Note your participation record: which wallet, which date

Each one takes about 30 minutes. I think of this pattern as picking up a stack of lottery tickets for free.

Risks and caveats

• Testnet plays are hit and miss​. Plenty of chains distribute nothing at all
• Watch out for fake testnet sites. Always enter from the official Discord or X link
• Whether to put real money on the mainnet is a separate decision. Keep the airdrop and the investment apart
