NEAR Protocol: No New Airdrop, Ongoing Staking Program Explained
What's happening
NEAR is a mature Layer 1 with mainnet running since 2020, and it has already completed its TGE (token generation event). At this time, no time-limited new airdrop or points campaign has been confirmed. Instead, ongoing mechanisms such as $NEAR staking and the NEAR Intents transaction fee buyback are active. Compute staking for NEAR AI is scheduled to launch in July 2026, and near.com has introduced a standing display called "NEAR@3.33" based on trading activity, though the reward details are not specified.
What to do
- Create an official wallet at near.org (free, a few minutes)
- Deposit $NEAR into your wallet and stake it with a validator
- Try cross-chain trading via NEAR Intents on near.com
Since there is no new points program or limited-time campaign, the ongoing staking yield is what's worth targeting. Even after the maximum annual inflation rate was cut to 2.5% in Q4 2025, staking participation has remained around 45%. This makes sense if you're prepared to hold long-term, but since the reward conditions for the "NEAR@3.33" standing are unclear, it's best not to over-trade just to chase it.
Past funding and distribution history
No details on past airdrop distribution amounts or eligibility conditions were found. What can be confirmed is the funding history: at least 3 rounds totaling $521,600,000 or more ($21.6M, $150M, $350M). The $350M round was led by Tiger Global, with a16z and Three Arrows Capital also confirmed as lead investors.
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Total funding raised | $521,600,000+ ($21.6M+$150M+$350M) |
| Key investors | a16z, Three Arrows Capital, Tiger Global |
| Audit | Hacken (conducted October 23, 2023) |
| Supply status | Circulating supply and FDV nearly match on CoinGecko; officially described as fully unlocked |
Cautions
- Details on total supply, investor allocation, and vesting are not confirmed, so transparency around the funding base is limited
- An ecosystem project, Rhea Finance, suffered an oracle exploit of about $7.6 million (this did not affect the NEAR protocol itself)
- The existence of a bug bounty program could not be confirmed
- There are reports of wallet UX issues and phishing sites, so avoid taking action outside official sites
- This is not suitable for those seeking a new points distribution. What you can actually target is staking yield and the long-term value backing from the NEAR Intents buyback design
